Student Support Resources and Emergency Procedure Reminders
January 9, 2025

Dear Bruins:

We know this has been an extraordinarily challenging time for our community, especially for our students. Many of you are navigating new and unfamiliar circumstances — living away from home, adjusting to life in a new city or commuting long distances to campus. This week’s wildfires in Los Angeles have added to these challenges, disrupting routines and creating uncertainty for many. As Chancellor Frenk expressed in his message yesterday, our hearts go out to all those who have been evacuated, lost their homes and possessions, tragically lost their lives or are grappling with the aftermath of this crisis. Please know that we stand with you and are here to support you as we move forward together.

We are reaching out to provide resources and additional information to help you navigate this challenging time:

Resources

We have compiled a comprehensive resource directory for students and will continue to update it as new information becomes available. Please bookmark this page and reference it in the coming days.

  • Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS): Students who are experiencing distress can reach out to CAPS at 310-825-0768. Crisis counseling is available 24/7.
  • Mask availability for those on campus: If desired, you may obtain an N95 mask from the Ashe Center or from any residence hall front desk.
  • Air Quality: We are closely monitoring air quality across campus, with real-time data available through UCLA’s AirQual website. Updates to campus operations will be shared with the community through BruinALERT.
  • Basic needs: Visit UCLA Basic Needs at the Student Activities Center or call 310-825-5969 for assistance. Students needing immediate assistance can complete an intake form.
  • Helping others: UCLA Newsroom has compiled ways to help those impacted by the wildfires or to receive aid if you have been impacted. The article will continue to be updated as more information and resources become available.

Emergency Procedures

UCLA’s emergency response plans range from shelter-in-place orders to the full evacuation of campus, depending on the situation. If there is a campus evacuation, the fire marshal and Office of Emergency Management will determine the best course of action for the situation and provide guidance via BruinALERT.

  • BruinALERT: UCLA’s public alert and warning system, used to distribute emergency notifications to the campus community. A BruinALERT emergency notification is primarily used in an emergency to notify the UCLA campus community of a dangerous situation and/or immediate threat to their health or safety. Click on the link to make sure your contact information is updated so you receive notifications. Your family and friends may also sign up to receive alerts by texting 'BRUINALERT' to 888-777.
  • Bruins Safe Online (BSO): The latest updates regarding campus operations and emergency statuses will be shared at BSO.
  • Bruins Safe App: The Bruins Safe app sends instant notifications and instructions when on-campus emergencies occur, allows for contact with campus safety staff quickly for help during an emergency or to report a hazard, and provides safety resources.
  • UCLA Fire Safety Resources: The following information can be helpful in reacting to and preventing fires: Fire and Life Safety, Dorm Fire Safety and Fire Extinguisher Training and Use.
  • View additional campus safety resources on BSO.

We also want to share that dining halls are operating as usual at this time. Please note that modifications may occur based on staffing availability. We encourage you to check the Dining website or select dining in UCLA Mobile for the most up-to-date information regarding hours and menus.

Additionally, events and community activities on campus may be modified in accordance with air quality and other concerns.

As we know more about how the fires evolve in the days ahead, we will share updates with you and keep you informed about classes and campus operations. Together we will get through this challenging time and help support those around us, as we all recover from this tragedy.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Beck
