Support for Our Campus Community
From: Vice Chancellor Gorden, Jr., Vice Chancellor Kang, Associate Vice Chancellor Levin, Chief Officer Takeuchi, Director Bhatnagar, President Tseng BruinPost@ucla.edu
To the Campus Community:
Following up on the message that leaders from across campus sent last weekend in response to the horrifying recent acts of racial injustice in our country, we want to further emphasize our shared commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. We hope the words of that message spoke to every member of our campus community — faculty, staff and students.
We know that there is work to be done to bridge the gap between UCLA’s ideals and our lived reality. We are committed to collaborating with our fellow Bruins to that end and to creating a truly welcoming and inclusive environment in which all members of our community feel safe and supported in achieving their educational and personal career goals. As we do that, we wanted to make certain that all of those who are struggling in these difficult times are aware that there are UCLA resources available to support you.
Our faculty and staff can access the following resources:
- UCLA’s Staff and Faculty Counseling Center provides free, confidential counseling and can connect you to other resources by calling 310-794-0245.
- UCLA’s Training and Development Office in Campus Human Resources offers a range of career development and management coaching opportunities that may be useful to your unit in challenging times. Rejeana Mathis, manager of training and development, can offer advice and expert consultancy at rmathis@chr.ucla.edu.
- UCLA Health’s Center for Organizational Readiness and Education (CORE) offers employees from the health system and David Geffen School of Medicine a wide variety of educational and organizational development opportunities. Sandra St Fleur, senior director of organizational development and learning, is available for consultation at sstfleur@mednet.ucla.edu.
- Managers who need help understanding how to support team members particularly affected by these traumatic events can reach out to either UCLA’s Staff Diversity and Affirmative Action/EEO Compliance Office at staffdiversity@chr.ucla.edu or to UCLA’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Office at welisten@equity.ucla.edu for assistance with supporting equity and inclusion in your department.
- UCLA’s Staff Assembly offers campuswide programs and activities for all staff to stay connected and engaged. Contact staffassembly@ucla.edu.
Support is also available to our students:
- UCLA’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) counselors are available 24/7 for crisis support at 310-825-0768. You can also make an appointment by visiting the CAPS website.
- UCLA’s Case Management Services assists students through crisis by helping them navigate resources on campus. Please email crteam@ucla.edu to schedule an appointment.
- Acts of discrimination are antithetical to the values of the university. To report an incident of bias, please visit the Dean of Students website.
Additionally, all members of our community can find an updated list of resources for racial trauma on the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office webpage.
In closing, please know that we stand together with all those mourning the tragic deaths of George Floyd and the many other Black people who have lost their lives due to racial violence. Now, as always, Black Lives Matter.
As our community navigates the trying times ahead, we share Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s reminder that “true peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.”
Sincerely,
Monroe Gorden, Jr.
