MESSAGE FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR

Dear UCLA Community:
Janina Montero, Vice Chancellor
Janina Montero
Vice Chancellor

We all gain a sense of hope and possibility that comes with spring, the season of renewal that unfolds so effortlessly this time of year.  Yet for those of us who are fortunate enough to be a part of UCLA and its greater community, we enjoy a sense of hope and possibility that is resonant all year round, and found in the diversity of people who live, work and study on our campus.

Such diversity is the very soil from which our lives grow, and yet we often do not appreciate how important it is, and may overlook its many benefits.  Diversity influences our lives in a number of essential ways: it introduces us to different ideas and critical thinking that foster growth, provides opportunities to explore new experiences, expands our cultural awareness, and improves our overall potential for personal and professional development.

Diversity is inclusive of distinctions of race and ethnicity, national origin, gender and sexuality, physical disabilities, age, talent and socio-economic status.  It is a catalyst for realizing our potential, and provides us with the means to create a better world for ourselves, and others as we give, share and support one another.  As the world expands into an ever more interactive and interdependent global community, it is especially important to see that the value we place on diversity today will determine the kind of future we live in tomorrow.

For everyone who is a part of UCLA – whether student, faculty, staff, or alumni – there are countless opportunities available here to learn and grow, to participate with and contribute to the diversity of community, programs and services that make this University truly great.  Whether you are a student graduating this June or returning in the fall, if you are out in the working world or work on campus every day, please stay involved with the UCLA family and its greater community.  For it is here that we sow the seeds of our potential, and begin to see hope and possibility in the world.

Sincerely,

Janina Montero
Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs
