Student Psych Services’ Dreams
Become Reality in Wooden West

By Christina Miller

On January 3rd, in the midst of rain and wind chill, the doors to a new Student Psychological Services at Wooden West opened to staff and students for the first time. That first week staff walked the halls in ski parkas due to a lack of heating, and parts of the building are still being finished. But the SPS staff has slowly settled in to one of the most beautiful new buildings on campus and to a new era for SPS.

Previously divided into 2 locations (Math Sciences and CHS) due to a shortage of space, the SPS staff is are now in one location for the first time, making it possible for more efficient day-to-day operations. Located in the center of campus and along the major thoroughfare that leads down from the residence halls, the new location is far more accessible for students.

Significantly larger than both of the old sites combined (the new building is as long as the intramural field adjacent to it), the new site provides more resources for services including: 3 group rooms, a large conference room and a smaller one, a new self-help center, and a spacious waiting area with one of the best views on campus.
SPS is a multidisciplinary team composed of psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers. Among the services that SPS offers are individual counseling, group therapy, medication management, workshops, emergency services, and consultation, outreach and educational services to the campus community. SPS is also the site of both a psychology and social work training program.

All registered UCLA students are eligible for SPS services. There is no charge for students who have the UCLA insurance. Those with other insurance plans are charged a $10 fee for an individual session. (Any students who are not currently enrolled should call first to determine eligibility status.)

A Grand Opening for Wooden West is being planned for early spring quarter. In the meantime, we invite our Student Affairs colleagues to drop in and take a stroll down our soothing, light-filled, scenic hallway. By the time you get to the end of it and look out at the view of the mountains, you are sure to feel less stressed, as we hope our students will as well.
