CSP Staff Scores a Hit in
Tsunami Relief
Dodgeball Tournament
By Melissa Veluz-Abraham
The UCLA Students for Tsunami Relief Dodgeball
Tournament that took place on Friday, February 4,
was a great success. The roster listed 34 teams
which included students from the Inter-fraternity
Council and Pan-Hellenic Council, members of the
UCLA Waterpolo team, Bruin Democrats, Bruin Republicans,
Calpirg, Engineers without Borders, Samahang Pilipino,
Vietnamese Student Union, and USAC. The Center for
Student Programming’s Old School Crushers
were joined by other staff entries that included
the Fried Chickens (ORL’s chefs) and a staff
team from ASUCLA. The event raised about $4,000,
including CSP staff’s generous donations in
support of the Crushers. All proceeds will go to
Oxfam!
Special thanks to our outstanding team players,
Mike Kockler, Scott Carter, Kenn Heller, Zoila de
la Pena, Willis Veluz-Abraham, and Mark (from the
Physics department). Ellen Archibald was on deck
as the cheerleader and photographer for the evening.
After winning the game against the United Khmer
Students team, the Crushers moved on to beat the
House of Flying Dodgeball (Kung Fu School Team)
in the single elimination round. After some fierce
dodgeball play, the Old Schoolers were defeated
by the SAE team (the eventual tournament champions)
in the semifinals round. We didn’t go down
without a fight as we were able to squeeze one winning
game in this best out of three round! These young
players underestimated the power of the Old School
Crushers!
Thanks again to everyone in CSP for your participation
and generosity. The students organizing the event
appreciated our support and enjoyed watching their
advisors getting pelted by balls for a very good
cause. We had a great time!
