It's still a grand old building
with basketball courts and a pool, but times have changed
for the old Men's Gym.
Completed in 1932 in a stately Italian Romanesque
style, the Men's Gym was one of the eight original buildings
on campus. Seven decades later, UCLA students voted to give
it new, student-focused identity and, in January 2004, the
Men's Gym was reborn as the Student Activities Center.
Designed to support student life on campus,
this beautifully renovated architectural gem near Bruin Walk
now houses a wide array of student services and organizations,
program offices, meeting rooms, and common and recreation
areas.
At the Center, students can gather to attend
life-enhancing workshops and club meetings, shoot hoops, swim
in the eight-lane pool, relax with friends or just find a
quiet corner to study.
"This is a great place to hang out with
friends or find new ways to get involved at UCLA, and the
best thing about it is it's all student-driven," says
Center Coordinator, Rudy Figueroa.
The Center's student-majority Board of Governors
ensures that students' interests are always well represented.
The Graduate Student Resource Center, The Center for Women
& Men and UCLA Recreation are just some of the organizations
based at the Center. |
